Meet Fox (Richard Moir), he is a young man who likes to live in the fast lane. He is one of the fastest street racers on the back streets of Sydney. But his whole world is about to be turned upside down as his latest challenge could not only lose him his girl, but also his life.

Living dangerously, living fast and winning at any cost is his obsession. The illegal street racers of down town Sydney don't turn back, they don't give in and they can never ask for help.

The film features cars such as the Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III, Dodge Charger and a '57 Chevy plus a multitude of other rare classic racing cars going at break neck speeds. 'Running on Empty' was a key film from the 'Oz-ploitation' era and is featured in the hit documentary 'Not Quite Hollywood'. Quentin Tarantino is said to be a fan of this film and others from this generation and have provided him with inspiration for films of his own.
