Historian Dr James Cant travels with the Royal Regiment of Scotland as they take their place in the front line in the fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan. As he joins the day-to-day life of these modern troops, he looks back on the proud history of those men who fought in the Scottish Regiments before them.

The series intercuts the experiences of the modern soldiers in Afghanistan with individual examinations of periods in the history whose events have similarities with the challenges that today s Regiment is facing.
